What does it say?
William Bell Scott (who painted that picture of King Ecgfrith asking Saint Cuthbert to become Bishop) was a Scottish artist who lived for a while in the North-East.
He created this painting called the Water-carrier, now in a museum in Canada.
It shows a well that actually exists. It originally had the first words of the Angel Gabriel engraved on the arch above the water – only one carved word remains.
Can you make it out? (it’s very hard to read)
Can you guess where it is? (Not Teesside)
