A Light from the Shore: Our Parish’s Gift to the Sea
Tuesday 16 December 2025
Can you imagine?
Imagine looking out at the horizon and seeing nothing but grey waves meeting a grey sky for weeks on end. For the men and women who work the sea, this is daily life. They are the invisible workforce that brings us 50% (average) of the goods we use every day, yet they often face profound isolation. They miss birthdays, anniversaries, and - hardest of all - simply not being at home with their families during the important festivals of their own culture, while they watch the rest of their world gather together.
This is where the Apostleship of the Sea, known globally as Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), becomes a beacon of hope. They are more than just a charity; for a lonely seafarer arriving in a strange port, they are a friend. A Stella Maris chaplain or volunteer doesn't just bring supplies; they bring a listening ear, a mobile to call home, and the reassuring presence of faith. They remind these hard-working souls that they are not forgotten by the world they serve.
Our Parish’s Response
This Christmas, our parish community answered that call to friendship in a spectacular way. We are overjoyed to announce that we were able to assemble 110 wonderful gift parcels for seafarers visiting our local ports.
The generosity shown was truly touching. As you can see from the photos, these weren't just simple handouts; they were care parcels filled with home comforts. Each distinctive checked and red festive bag was packed with essentials and treats to brighten a sailor's day.
The contents were chosen with such care: toiletries like shower gel and razors to wash away a hard shift, playing cards and writing pads to pass the lonely hours, and boxes of Toffifee and chocolate oranges for that necessary taste of Christmas sweetness.
An Embrace of Warmth
We must offer a special, heartfelt "Thank You" to our incredible knitting ladies. We know how cold it gets on the open ocean, and thanks to their tireless needles, we had enough supplies to ensure every single parcel contained a lovely woollen hat. Looking at the donations, we see thick, beautiful hand-knit beanies in blues, greys, and stripes, ready to keep someone warm during a freezing night watch.
The Joy of Receiving
The impact of your kindness is written all over the faces of the crew members in the photos we received. Gathered in their mess hall, wearing their work overalls and high-visibility vests, their smiles are radiant as they hold up our parish's festive gift bags. In that moment, they aren't just workers on a ship; they are brothers and sisters in Christ, feeling the love of a community they may never meet, but who prayed for them and cared for them.
To everyone who donated a tube of toothpaste, a pair of warm gloves, a box of sweets, or a cash donation - thank you. You have been the Star of the Sea for someone this Christmas.

Prayer from Pope John Paul II
Mary, Star of the Sea, light of every ocean,
guide seafarers across all dark and stormy seas
that they may reach the haven of peace and light
prepared in Him who calmed the sea.
As we set forth upon the oceans of the world
and cross the deserts of our time, show us, O Mary,
the fruit of your womb, for without your Son we are lost.
Pray that we will never fail on life’s journey,
that in heart and mind, work and deed,
in days of turmoil and in days of calm,
we will always look to Christ and say,
“Who is this that even wind and sea obey him?”
Our Lady of Peace, pray for us!
Bright Star of the Sea, guide us!
Our Lady, Star of the Sea, pray for seafarers, pray for us.
